The Fingerstyle Five includes a balance of traditional and contemporary blues material. Fans of David's Truefire lessons will find a dozen original blues in a similar vein – classic blues licks and traditional grooves reimagined with jazz-inflected chord voicings and piano-inspired double stops, bass lines and more.

If you can play a few basic fingerpicking patterns ("Travis picking") on the basic open chords, you know enough to get started in the membership. But if you've never felt totally confident about getting your fingers and thumb to work independently, I recommend checking out my free lesson "Fix Your Travis Picking In Six Steps" available here on my site. And if you've never played with a steady bass thumb pattern before, I also recommend checking out  "Six Steps To Playing Fingerstyle Blues In E, Step 1: Playing The Groove," available here as well.

My Truefire lessons like  Fingerstyle Blues Factory and Fingerstyle Essentials show you how to play an eight or twelve or sixteen bar blues, but that's as far as they go. Even New School Fingerstyle Blues, which breaks down some longer tunes of mine, only teaches the songs themselves.  Fingerstyle Five lessons are different in at least three important ways:

1. Different levels of the same song: You can learn a basic, or "fundamental" version of the song first, to get down the basic chords and melody, then come back and learn a more advanced, "embellished" version once you're ready for it.
2. Improvisation: Not only will you learn the song itself, you'll get model solos to practice, a collection of licks tailored to that song's specific groove and key, and practical, hands-on exercises for developing your soloing skills.
3. Arranging: For each song you'll also learn how to create a complete, performance-ready instrumental arrangement, with an intro, outro, solo, shout chorus and more.

The membership is $29/month, with no long-term commitment. When you sign up, you'll be charged $29 right away and then be billed automatically on the same date each month until you cancel. If you do cancel, your membership will continue until you reach the end of your current 30-day cycle.

All of the material is presented as video, with accompanying PDFs that include both standard notation and tab of all the exercises and arrangements. Most people use a combination of the videos and the tab, but if you learn best just by watching and listening, you can do that, too.

I don't currently offer private lessons, but inside the membership, there are multiple opportunities throughout the month to ask me questions via chat, and the forum is always available for posting a performance video and getting feedback from fellow students; I make an effort to weigh in as well, particularly if you are wondering about a specific aspect of the performance.

It typically takes students a week or two to get familiar with all that's available in the membership and figure out which material they need to start with first, so it really makes sense just to join when you're ready to get started. If you join right at the top of the month, you can be in sync with everyone else as we start a new topic, but if you join mid-month it'll give you a little time to poke around, see what songs or workshops you might like to check out in the future, brush up on your theory or right-hand technique, or just learn more about how to plan your practice sessions going forward.

I generally suggest starting with the current month's material, just because that is what other people will be discussing in the community forum and it is what I will be teaching and answering questions about in the weekly live streams. But you are totally free to just look through the archive and start with one of the two-dozen plus other songs, or check out the Soloing From Scratch workshops on basic right-hand coordination and getting started with improvisation.
